Maybe years ago but now Websockets are dead simple to use in virtually every language. Heck you can even pipe to a websocket server using websocat using the shell.
That Google snoops and watches your video, photos and emails should not be a surprise to anyone in 2022.
If your entire online identity is tied to a string that ends in @gmail.com they own you.
Nostr lets you specify who and what you subscribe to, so unless you subscribe to everything and everyone this isn't really a problem. You can also subscribe to followers' followers and expand that way.
I don't agree Nostr is P2P since clients must connect to relays and there's no provision at the time for client to client connectivity.
I found out about Nostr and due to the simplicity of the protocol I was able to start building right away.

Of course this doesn't work for people wishing to remain anonymous.
Last time I checked it out it depended on JS-specific behaviour which had to be replicated in other languages. It seemed like something was written first, and then they decided to extract it into a spec.
Maybe this has been cleaned up in the interim, but at the time a bunch of apps for it already existed so it was probably to late to go back.
That, and the insistence on 1-1 device:identity mapping (so you can't use the same account with multiple devices). And verifying an append-only log, so "show me Jane's recent posts" can't happen until it's downloaded & verified signatures for Jane's entire post history going back years.
It’s not the majority of stake that controls the chain, it’s the majority of honest users. Rich validators can collude to have 51% staking power and start to exert unwanted force, like censoring blocks for their own profit or doing something else unwanted, but the majority of honest users can decide to coordinate a soft fork and point their clients at a new chain. The controlling validators will only be rich on the old chain.

I honestly mean no offence but you are most definitely making choices for your users from a place that demonstrates lack of understanding.
Fiat currencies are the #1 tool criminals and corporations have used for ages to ruin the world and I don't see SourceHut banning projects using those (that would be ridiculous) but instead choose to ban a set of technologies that a minute percentage of the population uses like that's going to make any meaningful change.
Drew, fiat currencies are debased at the rate the old man chooses making everyone poorer and less well off every single day through inflation and that is what you choose to perpetuate.
The people will continue to innovate with or without Source Hut.
